Happy Birthday to Nelly

Cornell Iral Haynes, Jr. (born November 2, 1974), better known by his stage name Nelly, is an Grammy Award winning American rapper, actor and entrepreneur. He has performed with the rap group St. Lunatics since 1993 and signed to Universal Records in 1999. Under Universal, Nelly began his solo career in 2000 with his debut album Country Grammar, the title track of which was a top ten hit. The album debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 and went on to peak at number one. Country Grammar is Nelly's best-selling album to date, selling over 8.4 million copies in the United States.

His following album, Nellyville, produced the number-one hits "Hot in Herre" and "Dilemma" featuring Kelly Rowland. Other singles included "Work It" featuring Justin Timberlake, "Air Force Ones" featuring Murphy Lee and the St. Lunatics, "Pimp Juice" and "#1".
With the same-day dual release Sweat and Suit (2004) and the compilation Sweatsuit (2006), Nelly continued to generate many chart-topping hits. Sweat debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 chart, selling 342,000 copies in its first week. On the same week of release, Suit debuted at number one selling around 396,000 copies in its first week on the same chart. Nelly's fifth studio album, Brass Knuckles, was released on September 16, 2008 after several delays. It produced the singles "Party People" featuring Fergie, "Stepped on My J'z" featuring Jermaine Dupri and Ciara and "Body on Me" featuring Akon and Ashanti.
In 2010, Nelly released the album 5.0. The lead single, "Just a Dream", has appeared in the top ten of several singles charts and were certified platinum in the United States. "Gone" is the sequel to Nelly's 2002 worldwide number one single "Dilemma", also with Rowland, and serves as third single from Nelly's album.
He won Grammy Awards in 2003 and 2004 and had a supporting role in the 2005 remake film The Longest Yard with Adam Sandler and Chris Rock. He has two clothing lines, Vokal and Apple Bottoms. He has been referred to by Peter Shapiro as "one of the biggest stars of the new millennium", and the RIAA ranks Nelly as one of the best-selling male artists in American music history, with 21 million albums sold in the United States. On December 11, 2009, Billboard ranked Nelly the number three Top Artist of the Decade.

Singer Beryl Davis dies aged 87

British singer Beryl Davis, who sang with Frank Sinatra and Benny Goodman, has died in Los Angeles aged 87.Family spokesman Greg Purdy told the Los Angeles Times newspaper that she passed away on Friday from complications of Alzheimer's disease. Born in Plymouth, she began performing with her father, band leader Harry Davis, at the age of three.

A popular singer during World War II, she later became a star in the US, after singing on Bob Hope's radio show. Inspired by American singers, particularly Ella Fitzgerald, she toured around Europe before the war broke out, playing with Stephane Grappelli, big band leader Ted Heath and pianist George Shearing.

Her career blossomed throughout the war, thanks in part to a contract with the BBC, who broadcast up to 10 performances a week to the Armed Forces or the World Service. She was spotted by Glenn Miller and sang with his Army Air Force Band towards the end of the war. After his death, she decided to travel to America because, she said, "I wanted to meet Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Helen Forrest".

At least one of those wishes was granted when she appeared alongside Sinatra on the radio show Your Hit Parade.  Davis continued to sing into old age, her signature tune being the ballad I'll Be Seeing You, which had been popular with troops serving overseas during the war. She was married once, to Hollywood radio and TV star Peter Potter in 1948, but they eventually divorced.

Her partner of 35 years, Buck Stapleton, died in 2003. She is survived by three children a sister and two grandchildren.

Red Hot Chili Peppers play Knebworth Park in June 2012

Red Hot Chili Peppers have announced details of their only UK appearances of 2012.

The Californian funk-rockers will play an open air gig at Knebworth Park, Hertfordshire, on 23 June. Anthony Kiedis and co will also perform at Sunderland's Stadium of Light on 24 June. The band returned to the UK in September to play their first British show since 2007 at Camden's Koko venue for BBC Radio 1.  Their 10th studio album, I'm With You, topped the UK's official album chart when it was released earlier this year. This month they'll head out on their first UK dates with new guitarist Josh Klinghoffer. He replaced John Frusciante in 2009. After their Koko gig drummer Chad Smith told Newsbeat he felt the band had a "new, exciting energy""The people were really very responsive. We played a lot of new stuff and they seemed to enjoy it," he said. "We're just having a great time playing together right now." Tickets for the 2012 shows go on general sale on at 9am on Friday 4 November.

Child artist Kieron Williamson to hold new exhibition

A child artist whose paintings last year fetched £150,000 at a gallery in Norfolk has unveiled a new art sale and exhibition.

Suleymaniye Mosque in Istanbul is one of Williamson's ventures into "foreign waters"
Nine-year-old Kieron Williamson, dubbed "Mini Monet", will exhibit 12 new landscapes at Picturecraft Gallery in Holt, from 11 to 23 November.

The oil, watercolour and pastel originals are expected to fetch between £1,000 and £15,500 each.

He has already earned enough from art to buy a house on the Norfolk Broads.

The latest paintings include scenes from Kieron's home county and abroad.

Kieron's last exhibition at the Norfolk gallery in 2010 caused a stir across the art world, with his collection of works selling out in 30 minutes.

Fans camped outside the gallery days before the sale, with people from as far away as Arizona in the US snapping up his paintings.

His last exhibition was at the Delamore Arts Festival in Devon in May, where his works sold out before the event began.
'Massive progress'

"It's lovely to see a nine-year-old boy keeping traditional landscape painting alive," said Kieron's mother, Michelle.

2face Idibia covers Y! Magazine

It certainly brings to mind the iconic (Abraham) Lincoln Memorial at the National Mall in Washington DC! But it’s our very own African superstar, 2face Idibia; regal, confident, and positively sparkling on the cover of Y! Magazine – in what is certain to be another definitive issue.
“Forgive us for being excited!” says Chude Jideonwo, who is editor-in-chief of the magazine. “Our amazing team including photographer Obi Somto and stylist Maryanne Alabi have collaborated to deliver another stunning cover that magnificently conveys the near-legendary status of Innocent “2face” Idibia as well as the confident future that this edition captures so, dare I say, elegantly.”
In the interview, held on the last day of his 35th year, 2face speaks about the past 15 years of his music career; why the many risks he has taken have paid off, what he plans for the future; and why he thinks he has made it through the long haul. He also speaks about his new confidence in publicly speaking about his children, his thoughts about the women in his life from Vien Tetsola to Annie Macaulay, and the greatest lessons that life has taught him.
But that’s only the beginning! This edition of Y! Magazine features profiles of some intriguing young Nigerians. Wazobia FM’s Matse Uwatse speaks exclusively to Y! about her move from Wazobia to Nigeria 99.3; CP-Africa’s Nmachi Jidenma speaks about her job at Google Africa, and three bright stars from Northern Nigeria share their stories: entrepreneur Hassan Rilwan, political Bilyaminu Shinkafi, and mother-of-three photographer Aisha Augie-Kuta, who was this year’s The Future Awards Creative Artist of the Year.
Y!’s vision is to provoke thought and conversation beyond music, movies and fashion dialogue, and this edition continues in that tradition with features like Boko Haram & I, where CNN correspondent Alkassim Abdulkadir speaks about his experience meeting the dreaded leader of the sect; Where is the money?, where Aziza Uko shares the ‘secret’ on why many young people find it difficult to get sponsorship monies for their ideas, How to make chocolate, telling the amazing story of entertainment company Chocolate City, And the winner is…? Where we speak to the split-persona winner of the NLNG Prize for Literature Mai Nasara, and Generation Now, an editorial by Stanley Azuakola on why exactly Nigerians have a reason to celebrate.

Waje shows us the way

There are signs that the much anticipated debut album from Nigeria's top Diva, Waje, is drawing ever nearer. She just drops yet another single from the album, Words Aren’t Just Enough (W.A.J.E.). Black and white twins

James and Daniel are twins. What sets them apart is that one is white and one is black – and the differences don't end there, as Joanna Moorhead discovers

James (left) and Daniel Kelly
The two teenage boys sitting on the sofa opposite are different in almost every way. On the left is James: he's black, he's gay, he's gregarious, and he's academic. He's taking three A-levels next summer, and wants to go to university. Daniel, sitting beside him, is white. He's straight, he's shy, and he didn't enjoy school at all. He left after taking GCSEs, and hopes that his next move will be an apprenticeship in engineering.

So, given that they are diametrically opposed, there is one truly surprising thing about James and Daniel. They are twins. They were born on 27 March 1993, the sons of Alyson and Errol Kelly, who live in south-east London. And from the start, it was obvious to everyone that they were the complete flipside of identical. "They were chalk and cheese, right from the word go," says Alyson. "It was hard to believe they were even brothers, let alone twins."

The boys' colour was the most obvious, and extraordinary, difference. "When James was born he was the spitting image of Errol, and I remember seeing his curly hair and thinking – he's just like his dad. It was another two hours before Daniel was born: and what a surprise he was! He was so white and wrinkly, with this curly blond hair."

It wasn't the first time nature had shocked Alyson and Errol. Daniel and James were the family's third set of twins: Errol and Alyson each already had a set with a previous partner. Errol's first set are fraternal boys, Shane and Luke, who are 21; Alyson's are identical boys, Charles and Jordan, 20. The only singleton in the house is the couple's youngest child, and only daughter, 14-year-old Katie. "Apart from her, it's twin city," says Alyson. "At least life was made a bit easier by the fact that we always had two of everything."

But it was clear that having one black and one white twin was going to mark the family out, wherever they went. "We'd go on holiday and people would say, 'Is that one a friend you brought along?'" says Alyson. For Errol the response of strangers was harder to deal with. "People didn't believe Daniel was mine," he says. "They didn't always say anything, but I could tell it was what they were thinking."

K’naan's journey home.

Hip-hop artist K'naan revealed how an emotional and heart-rending visit to his homeland of Somalia this year intensified his desire to devote his music to social good.
The 33-year-old creator of the hit song "Wavin' Flag," which became an international sensation as the theme of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, boarded the last commercial flight out of Somalia 20 years ago before civil war ravaged his nation and sparked a humanitarian crisis.
Already firmly entrenched as a socially conscious artist, witnessing the impact of catastrophic famine on his stricken fellow countrymen during his recent visit prompted him to redouble his efforts to affect  positive change.
"It is a good moment to be in service of people," K'naan said. "I don't really know what other life to lead than one which is in service of others."

While in Somalia, K'naan met and spoke with sufferers of disease and malnutrition at one of the makeshift camps set up in the capital, Mogadishu. Once one of the most picturesque cities in Africa, the city is now a tragic, crumbling reminder of two decades of conflict. He also visited the hospital where both he and supermodel Iman were born, now in a dilapidated state and drastically under-resourced.
"The worst famine in decades pillages the flesh of the already wounded in Somalia," K'naan wrote in an article for the New York Times. "And the world's collective humanitarian response has been a defeated shrug. If ever there was a best and worst time to return home, it was now."
K'naan attempts to raise awareness of Somalia's plight will continue on Saturday, as he performs as one of the headline acts of "A Decade of Difference" concert, celebrating President Bill Clinton's charitable efforts.
The artist is already a friend of President Clinton's, having performed at the closing ceremony of the Clinton Global Initiative last month. Following K'naan's performance, Clinton made an impromptu visit to the stage to congratulate him on his performance and to raise awareness of the difficulties still raging in Somalia.
"My country fell out of the pocket of life," K'naan said.
Somalia's weak United Nations-backed government is under threat from Islamic insurgents including the al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab militant group, which refuses to allow aid organizations to enter the southern areas of the country that it controls.
As Somalia's problems raged throughout the past two decades, the memories of life in Mogadishu continued to affect K'naan, even after members of his family had moved to Canada. He was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder believed to be related to incidents from his childhood, including surviving a machine gun attack that killed three of his friends.
After arriving in Canada, he taught himself English largely from hip-hop music and television. Despite admitting that he sometimes spent months at a time as a social recluse in his bedroom, music gradually became his escape route towards a normal life.
"My mother was suspicious of Western medicine so she didn't want me to get treatment for the stress disorder," K'naan told Yahoo! Sports at the World Cup. "My way out of it was through music. By writing and singing about my experiences I could come to terms with it."
Critical acclaim began to filter in following his 2005 album "The Dusty Foot Philosopher," but it was "Troubadour" (released in 2009 and recorded at Bob Marley's old house in Jamaica) which established him as an international star and gave him the platform to exercise the kind of charitable influence he wished for.

This Is Lorenzo

One of the hottest radio personalities is set to rock your playlists without a totally patriotic and inspiring track. He goes by the name of Lorenzo Menakaya, who is a significant figure in the entertainment scenery in the South-East region. As a complete showman that he is, not only is he a radio presenter but he’s also an accomplished musicologist who can boast of having five-star perfomances in his resumè. Lorenzo’s powerful vocal presence earned him a nomination for the On-Air Personality (OAP) of the year in The Future Award (TFA) 2011 which potrays how tenacious, proficient and hardworking he is.
Given the political clime of the nation and the resurgence of hope amongst the youth with respect to the leadership of the country, it is not out of place that the single, aptly named “Good Morning Nigeria”, is to be released at such an auspicious time to awaken Nigerians to the belief of turning this country around. With this musical piece, Lorenzo seeks to preach peace to soothe the country still hurting from the bruises of previous times and also acts as a revolutionary, stirring the listener.
Good Morning Nigeria, ladies and gentlemen, is nothing short of a masterpiece, with well-written, hope provoking lyrics and sound production which has a wide-range of cinematic tones and african influences which seek to defy classification into a particular genre.
Now,this track doesn’t need to have a target audience as most songs do but it is designed for all Nigerians to listen to and make efforts to live in a “Land of hope and peace”.
